EastEnders viewers believe they have solved the mystery as a new storyline begins to unfold for Nicola Mitchell.
EastEnders has introduced a new mystery surrounding Nicola Mitchell, as she appears to be concealing a secret from 20 years ago involving her brother-in-law, Ned Hawkins.
Over the past year on the BBC soap, Nicola (Laura Doddington) has faced increasing financial difficulties after her eldest son Harry (Elijah Holloway) battled a drug addiction, while she also gave birth prematurely to her daughter Ivy.
Her former husband Teddy (Roland Manookian) was later jailed for a murder committed by Harry, while Barney (Lewis Bridgeman) found it difficult to come to terms with Zack Hudson (James Farrar) being his biological father.
Just as Nicola began settling into her new family life with George Knight (Colin Salmon), members of her own family arrived at her doorstep looking for somewhere to stay, including Ned (Jamie Bamber).
During Wednesday’s episode of EastEnders (September 30), Nicola was desperate to find a substantial amount of money to prevent her nightclub, Harry’s Barn, from being seized by bailiffs because of its growing debts.
After learning from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) that an old associate who had taken money from his therapy business was still in the area, Ned decided to track him down. Accompanied by Harry, he went to Walford High Street to confront a man named Adam and demanded that the stolen money be returned.
Ned warned Adam that he had recordings of their previous therapy sessions and would be willing to send them to Adam’s wife, Malandra, if he refused to cooperate.
Meanwhile, Rose Hawkins (Marian McLoughlin) and her daughter Gemma (Patricia Potter) attempted to organise a fundraiser at Harry’s Barn in an effort to prevent the venue from closing.
However, once the event began, guests quickly discovered that it was not actually a charity fundraiser, but an attempt to raise money to save the venue. As people prepared to leave, Nicola declared that she would rather let the locals drink the place dry than allow the bailiffs to take the profits.
Before long, the bar was packed with customers eager to spend money on drinks, but there was one major problem: Nicola had completely run out of alcohol. With her business facing closure the following day, Nicola headed home, only to find Ned waiting for her.
In an unexpected turn of events, Ned revealed that he had managed to secure the money needed to help save Harry’s Barn. Nicola was delighted by the news, although she appeared visibly uneasy. Ned then said: “I’m always happy to help. You should know that better than anyone. After all, we’ve been keeping our little secret for, what is it now, 20 years?”
Nicola smiled at Ned and gave him a playful wink before heading upstairs to her bedroom. However, once alone, the fear on her face became clear.
Following the dramatic revelation, EastEnders viewers are now speculating that Ned could secretly be Harry’s biological father.
Taking to Reddit, one viewer commented: “I’ve seen people suggesting that Ned could eventually be revealed as Harry’s biological father. This is one theory I can actually believe. (Poor Teddy).”
Another user kept it brief, writing: “Ned as Harry’s father.”
A third viewer, however, said they hoped the storyline would not go in that direction, writing: “I hope they don’t make Harry Ned’s son. It’s the same as the Barney and Zack storyline and would be incredibly boring to watch again, especially since the Barney/Zack storyline was c***.”
