What secret have Nicola and Ned kept hidden for the past 20 years?

Nicola is terrified that she may lose Harry’s Barn after discovering that the business is buried under a huge amount of debt. With the family joining forces to raise enough money to prevent the bailiffs from taking action, it seems Ned may be the one person capable of coming to the rescue.
However, there’s one major catch.
Nicola faces financial ruin in EastEnders
After discovering that Harry failed to make the final payment reminders, Nicola tells her family that she is at risk of losing everything.
Determined to support her older sister, Gemma comes up with the idea of holding a fundraiser at the bar in an effort to raise some much-needed cash.
As Gemma and Rose walk around the Square inviting locals to the event, people become puzzled about what the fundraiser is actually for. Gemma is upfront about Nicola’s financial troubles, while Rose and Jodie choose to be a little less truthful about the situation.
The fundraiser initially appears to be a success, but things quickly change when attendees discover that their money is going straight to Nicola. One by one, they begin heading for the exit, and it looks like the event is doomed.
Just when things seem to be falling apart, Ryder turns up with a group of stags, giving the fundraiser a much-needed boost.
Even so, Nicola’s problems are far from over. The stags soon drink the bar dry, leaving Nicola with no choice but to return home and admit defeat.
Ned comes to Nicola’s rescue
Elsewhere, Ned and Harry have been working on another way to raise some money.
Ned manages to track down a former business associate who stole money from him many years ago. He successfully convinces the man to repay what he owes, and the two return home feeling pleased with themselves. Nicola is then shocked when Ned tells her that she can use his money to clear her debts.
The latest episode of EastEnders also shows a more mysterious side to Ned, who has so far appeared kind and cheerful. Once Harry has left, Nicola thanks Ned for helping her avoid bankruptcy. Ned points out that she should have approached him sooner, adding that the two of them make a great team.
He then suggests that there is more history between them, saying he is always willing to help—particularly because they have managed to keep their secret hidden for the past 20 years.

Some EastEnders fans have suggested that Ned may have helped Nicola after Harry’s pregnant girlfriend, Shireen Bashar, died. However, that tragedy took place in 2021, meaning it cannot be the secret they have been keeping for 20 years.
Another theory doing the rounds is that Ryder could actually be Nicola’s son. The timing could potentially fit, but surely Gemma would already know if that were the case?
Other viewers believe the secret could be connected to Nicola’s father, who may have died around two decades ago.
There has recently been plenty of focus on Nicola’s difficult relationship with her late father, making this theory seem possible. But if Ned was involved, what exactly could he have done to help Nicola?
Earlier this year, viewers learned that Nicola’s father was killed in a car accident after driving while under the influence of alcohol. Could Ned have played a role in causing the crash?
Then there is Teddy, who recently appeared on screen after calling George from prison. During their conversation, Teddy specifically asked whether Ned had been with the rest of the family when they arrived.
Could there be more meaning behind that question than first thought? Or does Teddy know something about the secret being kept by his former partner and her brother-in-law?
